Barton William E. The Moral Challenge of Communism. Some Ethical Aspects of Marxist-Leninist Society.

The Lecture examines theoretical and practical features of some ethical aspects of Marxist-Leninist society especially in the light of Quaker principles and practice. Illustrations are drawn from several Communist countries including the Soviet Union and China and are partly based on personal observation. Among the areas of Marxist-Leninist society considered in the Lecture are education, work, the arts, marriage and the family, the penal system and social welfare. After a summary of negative and positive ethical aspects of Marxist-Leninist society, the implications of this study are briefly examined with special reference to Quaker social witness and to Friends part in a Christian-Marxist dialogue.
