Описание
The author of this book is a litvak, who has lived in a small Lithuanian town. Having graduated from the Vilnius University after the Second World War, he later taught there as an associated professor for several decades. When Lithuania became independent and the taboo on Judaic studies disappeared, he commenced his research on the history and heritage of Lithuanian Jews, the results of which research have been published in Lithuania and abroad. In Lithuania the national discrimination, especially cultural, was smaller than in most other countries. Jews formed a considerable part of the population, which caused them to settle in comparatively plentiful communities. Most cultural needs were thus served inside the community. The special features of their lifestyle, especially the religion, brought to partial seclusion. Traditional literacy, often higher than of most neighbors, brought to immunity against assimilation. Because of all this, the Lithuanian Jewry created a rich national culture throughout the centuries, forming a special type of Jew — the litvak. There were many famous personalities among the litvaks, who enriched the Jewish culture and the culture of the world in religion, literature, art, politics, business and other fields. The book is dedicated to this input. The settings of the book dictated the amount of names mentioned therein. Many a reader will be surprised by the lack of this person or other. The author will gratefully accept both critical reviews and information on litvaks not found in this book. This is a book for anyone who is interested in Jewish culture. INHALT: Who are the Litvakes? Shtetlakh. Religious thinkers. Litvakes - public figures. Litvakes — cultural figures. Litvakes in business. What are the conclusions? Glossary of terms.
