Описание
[British nonfiction, travel]. [`Реки и ручьи Англии`]. A detailed and affectionate topographical description of the different river areas. The angling opportunities of the English inland waterways are as much explored as the landscape and cultural history of the settlements along the river banks. Good text from A.G.Bradley, a keen fisherman - but the glory of this book is the 75 tissue-guarded glowing full plate watercolours by Sutton Palmer. Born in 1854 in Plymouth, Devon, where the Tamar and the Tavy both meet the sea, he spent most of his life as a landscape water-colourist, that particularly English medium so suitable for the subject of this book. Contents: -Ch.I `The Severn`, -Ch.II `The Wye`, -Ch.III `The Chalk Streams` (including the Thames), -Ch.IV `The Border Rivers`, -Ch.V `Two Avons`, -Ch.VI `The Rivers of Devon`, -Ch.VII `The Rivers of the South-East`, -Ch.VIII `The Yorkshire Dales`, -Ch.IX `An East Anglian River` (The Ouse). Prussian blue with art nouveau cloth designed by A.A. Turbayne with his scarab monogram, printed in green and white and titles printed to front and spine as well. Top edge not gilt and there`s no gilt on the front board so this definitely not 1st printing. Inman mentions only the 2nd printing (1914) so it is probably this, despite being dated 1909 (MCMIX). [Inman 23]. [Arthur Granville Bradley (1850-1943) was a British historian. He spent several years farming in Virginia. Upon his return to England, he became a colonial agent in Westminster. From 1897 to 1926 he was a prolific author of books. | Harold (`Harry`) Sutton Palmer (1854-1933) was an English watercolour landscape painter and illustrator. He illustrated several travel books for the publisher A & C Black, as well as postcards for A & C Black and Salmon. Sutton Palmer specialised in idyllic rustic landscapes painted in watercolours. His works can now be found in art galleries such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Leek Art Gallery and Wardown Park Museum, Luton, and also in private collections.].
