This thrilling story of a small detachment of the Peoples Liberation Army took place in 1946, in the early period of the War of Liberation, when the peoples forces represented by the Communist Party and the Kuomintang reactionary forces were in a temporary stalemate on the northeastern China battelefront. A group of defeated Kuomintang bandit leaders, their soldiers gone, sought refuge deep in the dense mountain forests. There, joining hands with professional brigands and landlord tyrants, they staged sudden raids on defenceless villages. Their savage burning, killing and plundering brought untold sufferings to the people. It also damaged the land reform, which was consolidating the rear and mobilizing manpower and material for the War. In the bitterly cold winter, a small detachment of the PLA was sent to round up these murdering brigands hidden somewhere in the boundless mountain forests. After a number of battles of wits and after surmounting unimaginable difficulties, the small detachment at last destroyed the bandit force which was several times its size. Several beautiful fairy tales are interwoven in these episodes about the courageous PLA.
