Oettinger A. G. Automatic Language Translation. Lexical and Technical Aspects with Particular Reference to Russian

`Research on automatic language translation draws from and contributes to two major disciplines — linguistics and automatic information processing — one with firm roots in antiquity and tradition, the other newborn and not yet fully conscious of its identity,` Mr. Oettinger says, foreseeing the day when translators, `relieved of tedious routine labors by automatic drudges,` will be free to concentrate on interpretation. Primarily concerned with certain fundamental lexical and technical problems of translation by machine, the author begins by describing available machines and techniques of coding, and discusses the general aims of translation and what can be accomplished by machine. The remaining chapters are devoted to Mr. Oettingers extensive study of translation from Russian to English, using a Univac I computer. He includes material on the fundamental problems common to other pairs of languages and to other information-processing machines. The compilation and operation of the Harvard Automatic Dictionary are described, for a lexicon is regarded as the foundation on which syntax and semantics are to be built. In conclusion, the author indicates the way to a transition from automatic dictionary to automatic translator.
